Is Shakespeare Overrated?

No doubt that Shakespeare is a literary legend however does that mean that his work is perfect?!? And that when one learns to read and understand his work that person attains a high level of wisdom?!? Is he worth being held up as the greatest playwright ever? I personally don’t think so! I have read three of his plays Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and Julius Caesar along with some sonnets. The idea or message behind his work is not extraordinary however his writing style is what makes him stand out from the rest of the writers. His writing style seems ambiguous at first and difficult to comprehend however when one looks behind the figurative language a clear image is established and one eventually realizes that his ideas are very typical. His plays are held up as masterpieces of moral depth and knowledge, however I believe that there are many other plays that hold more meaning and morals that deserve to be overvalued.

i agree with your overall analyses of Shakespeare, especially with the concept of him using unoriginal ideas however possessing a unique writing style. i also find his writing to be ambiguous at first however becoming clearer. the statement that "that there are many other plays that hold more meaning and morals" is similar to the point i was trying to make in my post.

EXACTLY!! I completely agree with everything you just said, Shakespeare really is overrated and is made out to be great purely based on his skill as a playwright and not on his ideas, which may be fine, but this isnt how it is seen in the general public. I am POSITIVE there were way better people much more skilled than he was, but his luck or series of events that happeneded upon him have shaped his fame to the point of him being a literary god, a title that i don't really feel he deserves. well-put Dana, i love the message you are putting across :)
